Endless Voices One Sound VII

with Temasek Polytechnic Chorale

In January 2023, I had the opportunity to perform with TP Chorale for their seventh edition of Endless Voices, One Sound, EVOS. I was chosen to be one of the emcees for this concert as well as a singer. This was a concert that was run entirely by students, with the guidance of our conductor, Miss Choy Siew Woon.  Through the preparation leading up to the concert, my peers and I were faced with many challenges, one of them being that there was a nasty flu bug going around merely a week to our show, so it was challenging to keep up with everything on top of schoolwork as well during that period. However, I am very proud of us for pulling through because we were there for each other and emerged stronger.

Voices A Cappella Gala

Organised by Esplanade: Voices Festival

As part of the Voices Festival Choir at the Esplanade's Voices Festival, I got to perform alongside 80 other youth with 1023, MICappella and Acapellago. I was exposed to different singing techniques and got to observe and learn from musicians who actually sing in a vocal band, a cappella. As part of the festival choir, we got to sing with these three talented bands. We got to do a flash mob of Circle of Life from The Lion King and This is Me from The Greatest Showman. These arrangements were unique because we were singing in a different style and that was very interesting for me.

Singathon 2022

Organised by Sing'Theatre

Singathon is an annual fundraising 12 hour long concert that Sing'Theatre holds in order to raise funds for their community outreach projects (which consists of bringing live music to hospitals and teaching musical theatre to underprivileged communities). This concert can be watched live or via the livestream on Facebook and Youtube. I decided to take part in Singathon because I really support the cause and if someone can benefit from my singing, then I will try my best to do that.

Festival Choir Showcase

Organised by Esplanade: Voices Festival

Another opportunity that I got from being in the Voices Festival Choir was the chance to perform at the Esplanade Concourse. We did songs that created various different sounds which resulted in many different feelings and emotions being portrayed. We sang about witches, trolls and goblins, but then we also sang about our dreams and longing to chase them. Then, there was also a song that sounded like a gospel choir piece too. Being in the Voices Festival choir really rekindled my love for choral singing and it was a very good timely reminder for me to keep singing and doing what I was doing. I don't have many pictures of this performance, except this one with flowers that my friends surprised me with after the show.

Christmas With the King Singers

Organised by Esplanade: Voices Festival

As part of the Voices Festival Choir, I had the biggest opportunity to attend an exclusive workshop with The King Singers and also perform on the same stage and sing with them. All this within 2 days, and- without anyone conducting in front. Through the different exercises that The King Singers taught, I also learnt the power of the collective breath and how that helps to effectively sing without needing someone in front to bring the music to life. It was a very big thing for me to perform with the King Singers because I used to grow up listening to them sing and I felt very privileged to have been given the chance to work with them

Orchard Road Christmas Light Up

with Temasek Polytechnic Chorale

One of the performances that I did with Temasek Poly Chorale was when we performed at Orchard Road in front of Takashimaya for the opening ceremony of the lights at Orchard Road for Christmas. This was quite an interesting project because it was a very grand event. Madam Halimah Yacob was there and a lot of important distinguished guests as well. It was a cordoned off sheltered space for these VIPs- we were performing under a tent and it was raining very heavily but it was cool because there were many people who came to stand in the rain outside the cordoned off space, to watch us. We sang some Christmas jingles and I was very happy because my grandparents travelled to town to watch me perform.

Northeast Community Golf & Appreciation Dinner

with Temasek Polytechnic Chorale

This was a performance where I performed with Temasek Poly Chorale and we had to sing at this big ballroom at Orchid Country Club. We sang a few songs and I recall that for that performance, there were not enough Tenor (this is the highest male voice part in a choir) voices, so my friend and I were tasked to learn it too, to help anchor our friends. I had never sung that prior and my voice is usually quite high, so we were struggling and nervous at first, but in the end we managed to sing and help the male voices sound more balanced. This performance taught me focus while being on stage as a performer because as we were singing, there were a lot of distractions around us and most of the guests were not really listening, they were talking to each other, so it was quite a lot of noise around us and the choir had to try their best to filter out the noise and still listen to each other on stage and watch the conductor.

 The Sound Of Music

with Vocal Associates

I was thrilled to be casted as Elsa Schraeder (the baroness) in Vocal Associates' production of The Sound of Music. Growing up, The Sound of Music was one of my favourite musicals and coincidentally, I watched Vocal Associates perform The Sound of Music in 2015. That was what motivated me to join the singing group because I enjoyed the performance very much and I wanted to be just like them, so it felt like a full circle moment for me. Rehearsals for the show were not easy and a lot was expected from us, but we always rehearsed together outside of rehearsal and gave each other tips or advice on character choices and that made the whole show better. What made this show for me, was the cast that I was performing with. We became very good friends and grew together through the experience.

Songbirds Series VI

with Ms Khor's Studio

Every year, the singing school that I go to, Ms Khor's Studio, holds an annual recital, called Songbirds for their singing students at Esplanade Recital Studio with the aim to give them performance opportunities. I have sung with the studio since I was 12 so this was not the first time I was singing with them. However, this year, for Songbirds, we were tasked to learn how to do more theatrical movement and expression. We also had to get our own costumes for show day. I sang a song called Prayer to the Moon from Vanara the Musical- and the character who sings this song was the Moon Goddess, so I decided to make my own costume of how a Moon Goddess should look like, on top of singing and applying my techniques. I was very happy with how everything came out and there was a lot of growth coming out of this performance in terms of singing technique for this genre.

A Renaissance

with Singapore Lyric Opera Children's Chorus

In July, I got to perform with the Temasek Poly Chorale at Victoria Concert Hall, together with Singapore Lyric Opera Children's and Youth Choir. It was the first concert that the school choir had ever done outside of school since the pandemic. I was very excited because this was my first out-of-school choir performance, and on such a large scale too! We sang a few songs by ourselves and a few songs with SLOCC, and it was quite fun!

Into the Woods

with Sing'Theatre Academy

This was my ultimate FAVOURITE performance of the year. I was casted in Into the Woods as the Witch, Granny and Cinderella's Stepsister for my showcase performance at Sing'Theatre academy. It was pretty amazing putting up such a hard show and very fun because it was challenging. I learnt so many things- from learning how to organise the character's journey through the music, to even the simplest of things- singing with a backing track. While in rehearsal for Into the Woods, I made stronger bonds with the ensemble and that helped us remain united in putting up a good show. As the Witch, because she is very different from my usual self, it was a bit uncomfortable to be loud and unruly, but overtime, I got to enjoy and love playing her. It also helped that I could analyse and understand her. My favourite phrase from the show is,"Witches can be right. Giants can be good. You decide what's right. You decide what's good."

A Letter to my Beloved Gaia

with Vocal Associates

This was one of my few performances with Vocal Associates in 2022. It was our annual June concert and we performed animal themed choral works that were funny and cute. We also dressed up as animals and I made my own costume- which was a cow inspired outfit. I particularly enjoyed this concert because I got to stand next to my voice teacher in the concert hall and that was so fun for me to learn from her musicianship and sing next to her. I also enjoyed this concert because we dressed up for it and it was unique that we all dressed up as different kinds of animals  on stage.
